Jan can’t remember a time when she didn’t love the Lord. She played “church” when she was a little girl; she sang at her first funeral when she was seven, and she was credentialed by the Pentecostal Holiness Church when she was 16. She has traveled the country with a singing group, is on albums with Jimmy Swaggart and Dale Evans, has been in a street ministry and was a worship leader. She got married over the phone and has lived in Saudi Arabia. She has also had huge hurts in her life: a divorce, the death of her mother, having to put her husband in a nursing home when he became a danger to himself and others. She says, “Through it all God has proven over and over again that He is faithful and that He is the God who restores.”

Jan came to Community Church in 2014. It was a time of grieving over her husband’s illness and the decision to move him to an assisted living facility, but within a short time God had her fully involved in ministry once again. Jan now serves as the director of the Care ministry and of the Life with Friends ministry. Through these ministries God is teaching her to “see the people,” not just the tasks that need to be accomplished. “He is asking me to stop, to see the people, see their hearts. He’s showing me how to stop long enough to say, ‘Father, let me see with Your eyes.’” As God has helped Jan to “see,” she has developed a calling ministry to make sure people 65 and older have a source of connection within the church through phone calls from other members.

The Life with Friends ministry she oversees includes Travel with Friends, Music with Friends and Meals with Friends. The next trip being offered is to the Ark Encounter in Kentucky June 15-19. A visit to the Ark, the Creation Museum and other venues is included, and available spots are filling fast, so if you want to go, sign up as soon as possible. Another trip planned is the 10-day trip to Israel in November, and there are still spots available for that as well. Less exotic but just as fun are the weekly Music with Friends time of singing on Wednesday mornings at 10:30, and Lunch with Friends on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:30.
